Language Arts
In phonics, we will be spending time reviewing the following r-controlled vowels: ur, ir, ar, er, and or. These sounds are used in words such as murk, first, start, hammer, and fork. The students are also using the vowel combinations "au," “augh,” and “aw” (building words such as sauce, taught, and law). We are practicing reading and writing many words with these letter patterns. Synonyms and antonyms will also continue to be reviewed.
This month, we will spend a lot of time talk about different habitats on Earth. The habitats covered will include: rain forest, desert, African savanna, temperate woodlands, ocean, arctic, Antarctic, and wetlands.
In writing, we continue working hard to build our "hamburger" paragraphs. Students are working on starting paragraphs with an opening sentence (the top bun), adding three or four juicy details, and then ending with a closing sentence (the bottom bun). I continue to emphasize careful and neat handwriting, utilizing the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum.

Math
This month we will be wrapping up our unit on coins. During this unit, students learn the worth of half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies -- so any time you can practice counting change at home, please feel free to do so!!
Later this month, we will move on to an additional unit about money, which builds off of our work with coins. During this time, we will work with pricing, as well as the addition and subtraction of money amounts. Students will also practice estimating the sums and differences of money amounts.
We will then move on to measurement and time.
